Thermal labels are a commonly used type of label in logistics, manufacturing, and retail. These labels are often used to identify products, provide information about package contents, and make it easier to sort and track products. There are two types of thermal labels: thermal transfer and direct thermal. In this blog, we discuss the difference between these two types of labels.

All you need is an address label or shipping label, and now you have to choose between direct thermal labels or thermal transfer.

What is the difference, and when should you choose which?

It is actually very simple. The only question you need to ask yourself is; what kind of printer do I have? If you have a Toshiba B-EV4T or a Zebra (T)LP 2844 , you should go with thermal transfer. Almost every other printer is suitable for direct thermal labels such as:

Zebra A300 Zebra DA402 Zebra G-series Zebra ZT220 Zebra (T)LP 2742 Zebra S4M Zebra ZT200 Zebra (T)LP 3842 Zebra (T)LP 2844 Bixolon SLP-DX420G Bixolon SLP-DX420G ethernet Toshiba B-EV4D Toshiba B-EV4T Brother TD-2130N Brother TD-4100N Intermec Easycoder C4 But now the big question; what is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer?

Direct thermal:

For shipping labels with a short lifespan, the direct thermal technique is often used. The print is created using heat. The printhead uses heat to print on parts of the label. The top coating of the direct thermal label reacts to the heat. You can also test this by scratching the label with your fingernail or a sharp object. The scratched area will discolor.

Thermal transfer:

If you have a printer with a ribbon in it, this technique is called thermal transfer. The labels do not have a top coating like direct thermal labels. The ribbon sits between the printhead and the material. Instead of printing directly on the material, the printhead first prints on the ribbon. The quality of the thermal transfer technique is many times better than direct thermal. This technique is widely used for printing labels for patient registration or labels that are applied to products with durability requirements. There, that mystery is solved. Of course, you can get both types of labels from crazylabels.

Conclusion:

The main difference between thermal transfer and direct thermal labels is how the information is applied to the label. Thermal transfer labels require ink, while direct thermal labels do not. Thermal transfer labels often last longer and are more resistant to external factors, while direct thermal labels are often cheaper and produce a sharper print. The type of label you choose depends on the application and the specific requirements for the label
